Dasychira & Yikii –

Dasychira –

〈original〉

– Please tell me about your childhood.

Dasychira – I had a beautiful childhood growing up in South Africa, although I felt quite sheltered in the suburbs. My parents exposed me to classical music from an early age, and I started recorder lessons when I was six. I had a dear music teacher who inspired me to pursue it further and start taking piano lessons. My mom always tells me this story when I ran home one day after a piano lesson begging her for Dvorak’s New World Symphony on CD. It was my first album. I was a sensitive, effeminate child – and as I got older, the pressures of boyhood didn’t feel relevant to me – and my rejection of it resulted in torment from the mean kids in my school. I think I was forced to sublimate my gentleness to fit into the expectations the other kids and teachers had for me.

Yikii – My childhood was immersed in books, because my parents rarely allowed me to go out to play, and the Internet was strictly restricted, so I could hardly touch much of the outside world. I spent most of my time alone at home reading all kinds of books, entertaining myself, staying with my dog, drawing and writing things. It seems that there are not many vivid memories interwoven with the real world, which are repeated day after day. The fantasy world outside the retina, whether it is the medieval land where magic prevails or the utopia where everyone can have iron wings, can be incredible reality.

– Can you tell us about your personal history?

Dasychira – Playing Pokemon religiously, especially Gold and later Ruby. My favorite was the Pokemon RPG release on GameCube – Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness. Videogames are a big part of my life, and have captivated my imagination.

Yikii – i can remember lots of dreams everyday.

– How did you get into making music?

Dasychira – I wasn’t the best piano student when practising other composer’s pieces – but my teacher noticed that I liked to improvise and helped me focus more on training my ears. I used to write small four-bar compositions on my upright at home, and when I was early for piano lessons my teacher would sometimes eavesdrop on me playing them before we started. Later on, I got into rock from my friends and started playing guitar and bass. I was in a band called Poison Apple when I was 14 that went through a few name changes. I got heavily interested in songwriting and recording our songs in Garageband and adding additional production in Cubase. My engineering interest grew and I bought magazines like Future Music that came with these demo CDs. I got a demo of Ableton live 7 and it’s been my main DAW since. After that, I made dubstep with my friends, then indie-pop, and eventually, the keepsakecore I make now.

Yikii – I’ve always loved writing, to give a foreign language to songs to by writing lyrics, when I learned to play the piano as a child I often wrote my own music, then later on the computer using Garageband I began to make my own songs. I admired artists whose work felt universal, so I also began to write my own lyrics, melodies and arrangements. I realized that I had long wanted to describe the world that exists fully in my heart.. Whenever I write my pain and sorrow is released, the mood is turned into poetic notes, writing music for me is the most important and essential thing in life.

– Please tell me the process of production of “Bubble Wrap Armor” with Yikii?

Dasychira – Yikii and I began talking to each other about a year ago after we became Facebook friends. I discovered her genius release on Quantum Natives called Gentle Nightmare The sincerity and emotional depth in her work gave me that same cathartic feeling as the relief after an intense bout of crying. When we got in touch, I told her how much I loved her work, and if she was interested in collaborating I would be honored. I had a demo for a song called Pandora that I felt needed vocals – so I sent her the instrumental and almost overnight she sent me back perfect recordings. I arranged them into the song and still had multiple vocal takes left over, which I built into the other songs on my album she’s featured on, Skitty and Scribble Chalk Drawing. We both felt a natural collaborative chemistry with each other, and at the time we started to speak we were both in deep depressions. Our music together was one of the only things that gave us hope, and we realized that we could cheer ourselves up with more collaboration. Yikii first sent me two demos in the making of Bubble Wrap Armor, for Future Tell and Faerie Circus Waltz. There was so much immediate potential in both songs that we finished them within a few weeks. Our friendship blossomed deeper and deeper, and we sent each other handcrafted objects in the mail. In one of the coldest days of winter, I sent her a sculpture of a fairie, and she sent me her beautiful handmade gems back. Our support of each other felt like a shield in the darkness of the world, an armor made from bubble wrap.

Yikii – The first time I heard Dasychira’s music, I felt exposed to a whole new world, a new dimension, that is Dasychira’s own music world, extremely large, diverse, lively and beautiful. I have so much resonance with Dasychira. We understand each other and are completely interoperable in spirit. When writing a song together, a lot of inspiration naturally emerges. The first one is Future Tell, I feel as if I am not myself. Writing, but it naturally tilted out of my hand, like magic, initially it was just a simple draft, but Dasychira got the right idea and understood it perfectly and deducted it to perfection. When Dasychira finished the first demo and sent it to me, I was so touched. I couldn’t imagine that this song could be made into such a dream. At that time, I felt that life has rekindled hope and can make such wonderful expressions together. The music is really incredible. Then we made three other songs together. Dasychira always took my ideas to the extreme. I always felt that meeting Dasychira was one of the happiest things in my life.

– What is the concept behind your album “xDream”?

Dasychira – xDream is re-awakening of the child spirit, the internal conscience we form as children that creates the building blocks of who we are as people. The album addresses the way we let go of our child spirits growing up, allowing them to die or fade away by falling into societal pressures and expectations for identity for the external world. When people stop listening to the little voice in their head that tells them right and wrong, they lose a part of themselves. For me, this spirit died in adolescence and was locked away in a time capsule. xDream is a ritual of opening this time capsule to confront secrets and truths about myself.

– Usually what do you do?

Dasychira – Make music and hang out with my cat at home.

Yikii – Stay home with my cat and make music.

– What do you think about the scene that you’re a part of? UNSEELIE and more.

Dasychira – I am really blessed to know so many talented and inspiring artists who realize fantasy in their work. UNSEELIE feels like a platform to tap into the realm of magic in everyday life and amplify it with music, art and performance. Other collectives such as Genome 6.66 Mbp, s.M.i.L.e., and Lynn create an amazing community around them that encourage a similar sense of individuality and experimentation – and ultimately a space to dream.

– What are your hopes and thoughts for the future?

Yikii – Keep making more and more music.

Dasychira – Me too!
