前進を続ける20年代型トランスと幸福論

 

 

「TDJを始めた時、世界はとても暗かったから、みんなに光が必要だと感じました。トランスは、ただ自分を投影して、ちょっと夢を見て、自分を解放するのに最適な音楽。人々は人生にポジティブなエネルギーを求めている。トランス・ミュージックはまさにそれを提供してくれる。」

 

パンデミックと共に生まれた2020年代型トランスプロジェクト。カナダ・モントリオール出身のプロデューサー、Geneviève Ryan-MartelによるTDJが現在ワールドツアー『Trance D​é​tente Jazz TOUR』を敢行中。2024年2月22日には一夜限りの日本公演として「AVYSS Bliss」に出演。私たちは来日中のTDJと共に歌舞伎町や浅草寺にて撮影を行った。

──アーミン・ヴァン・ビューレンのトランスとTDJのトランスに違いはありますか？あるとしたらどんな点において違うと言えますか？

 

TDJ : アーミンの曲をプレイしたり聴いたりするのは楽しいです。彼はレジェンドだし、彼のサウンドは確かに私のサウンドと合うと思う。でも、どんな成功したアーティストでもその人特有のサウンドを持っているはず。私もトランスや音楽全般に対する独自の表現方法を持っていて、それがアーミンや他のアーティストとは違うところだと自信を持って言えます。

 

 

 

──近年、トランスミュージックは姿を変えてメインストリームに戻ってきていると思います。不安定な時代背景と陶酔感溢れるトランスミュージックの隆興には関係があると思いますか？あるとすればどんな関係性になるのでしょうか。

 

TDJ : そう、それはTDJプロジェクトを始めたときから思っていたことです。数年前、トランス・ミュージックに夢中になり始めたとき、自分に必要な音楽だと感じました。私にはこの多幸感と高揚感が必要だったんです。それは本当に天職のようだった。その使命を担うのは自分だけではないことも知っていました。世界の状況を考えると、何らかの逃避を求めているのは非常に理にかなっている。そして、コロナ初期に、私はすぐにその世界に飛び込んだんです。

 

 

 

──僕たちのトランスは、その反対にある絶望をまず受け入れて、それを乗り越えることです。しかし一方で、絶望を拒絶しその刹那的な陶酔感に浸るようなトランスもあると思います。TDJのトランスはどちらでしょうか？

 

TDJ : TDJのトランスは、その両方をミックスしたものだと思う。強いメランコリックなフィーリングがあり、受容のアイデアにも触れている。私には、過去にとらわれることなく、繰り返し前に進む必要性があると感じています。この前進するということは、ある種のマキシマリスト的なアプローチも伴う。それは強烈な喜びと幸福を得る私のサウンドにも表れています。私は自分の曲で冒険を創り出すのが好きです、ゆっくりと深い思考へと誘い、至福の境地に導いていくのです。

 

 

 

──僕の主観なのですが、テクノが肉体的な音楽としたら、トランスミュージックは精神的な音楽、言い換えれば、体で楽しむ音楽と、魂で楽しむ音楽とも言えるかもしれません。そしてそれ故にトランスミュージックは東洋哲学に基づく価値観と非常に相性がいいと思います。今回のワールドツアーではアジア諸国も回りますが、その想いについて聞かせてください。

 

TDJ : 音楽は非常に主観的なものだと思います。どんなジャンルでもユニークな方法で知覚され、体験することができるし、リスナーの一人一人が独自の定義を持っています。私にとってトランス・ミュージックは精神的であると同時に肉体的なものです。心と身体で受け取ることのできる旅です。プレイするときは、360度のエネルギーを観客に伝えたいと思っています。

 

アジアに行くことをとても楽しみにしていたし、特別なものになる予感がしていました。そしてその通りになった。今までのショー、特に東京のショーは全てが魔法でした。自分の好きな音楽を、100％楽しみに来てくれた人に向けてプレイしています。自分の曲に合わせて言葉やメロディーを歌うこともあります。この最初のアジアツアーは一生忘れないです。

 

 

 

 

──未来に希望のない日本の若者に一言お願いします。

 

TDJ : 私たちを取り巻くポジティブなものに目を向けることが大切だと思う。希望は楽観的であることと、限界に挑戦し続ける勇気によってもたらされる。犠牲と努力はつきものだけど、そうやって夢は目標に変わっていくのです。

 

 

 

 

──Are there any differences between Armin Van Buren’s trance and TDJ’s trance?  If so, in what ways do you think there are differences?

 

TDJ : I do enjoy playing and listening to some of Armin’s songs. He’s a legend. I think his sound can fit well with mine for sure. But I think any successful artist has a specific sound. I can confidently say that I have a unique approach to trance and music in general, that differentiate me from Armin or any other artist.

 

 

 

──I think that in recent years trance music has undergone a transformation and returned to the mainstream. Do you think there is a relation between the unstable times and the rise of euphoric trance music? If so, what is the relation?

 

TDJ : Yes, that’s a thought I have since I started this TDJ project. When I started to be obsessed with trance music, a few years ago, I felt like it was the music I needed. I needed this euphoric and uplifting feeling. It really was like a calling. I knew I was not alone to have the calling. It really made sense with the world’s situation to be looking for some kind of escape. And I jumped right into it at the beginning of Covid.

 

 

──Our trance is about accepting and overcoming the despair that lies on the other side. But, the other side, there are trance that reject despair and bask in its ephemeral euphoria. What kind of trance is the TDJ’s trance?

 

TDJ : I think TDJ’s trance is a mix between both. There’s a strong melancholic feeling that also touches the idea of acceptance. I have a recurring need to move forward, never be stuck in the past. With this forward motion also comes some kind of maximalist approach, that we can hear in my sound, procuring intense joy and happiness. I love to create adventures with my songs, slowly taking you through deeper thoughts, then up to some state of blissfulness.

 

 

 

──If techno is a physical music, trance music is a spiritual music. In other words, techno is music to be enjoyed with the body, and trance is music to be enjoyed with the soul. Therefore, I believe that trance music is very compatible with values based on Eastern philosophy. 

 

TDJ : Music is very subjective. Any genre can be perceived and experienced in a very unique way. Every single listener has its own definition. For me trance music is spiritual and physical at the same time. It’s a whole journey that can be received with the mind and body. I really try to pass on this 360 degrees kind of energy to the crowd when I play.

 

 

 

 

──This world tour will take you to Asian countries. Do you have any thoughts or images about Asia?

 

TDJ : I was so excited to come to Asia, I had a feeling it would be special. And it is. All the shows I played until now, specifically the Tokyo one, were magic. I play my favorite music and to people that are 100% here for it. Even singing words and melodies to my own songs. I will remember this first Asia tour 4ever.

 

 

──What would you like to say to the young people of Japan who have no hope for the future?

 

TDJ : I think it’s important to focus on the positive things that surround us. Hope comes with the capacity of being optimistic and the courage to keep pushing limits. It comes with sacrifices and hard work, but that’s how dreams are turned into goals.
