Malibu interview

Malibu – YouTube

– Can you tell me about your personal history?

Malibu – Just a simple girl who was born on a Wednesday of November, grew up playing with a Sylvanian families house on rainy days, likes the beach in December, prefers sunrises over sunsets.

– How did you get into making music?

Malibu – Met someone who I related to musically ; we had the same love for big atmospheric pads, clear reverb vocals, overly melodious music. She made music back then (still does) and it made me want to try as well. I thought it was a great language i had never really tried to speak before.

– You are also known as dj lostboi. How do you differentiate the two artist names ? Spot the differences.

Malibu – LB is essentially a kid who only makes reworks of very good tracks and the music is almost exclusively samples. Well.. I sample as well—choirs, waves, wind and rip my own mixes—, but I mainly write string ensembles chord progressions, put tons of reverb of basically anything and talk or/and sing softly sometimes.

– What is the concept behind your album “One Life” ?

Malibu – To be honest…no concept at all. Did not even think once of titles until I had given the masters to the label and they asked for them.

– Please tell me the process of production of “One Life”?

Malibu – I decided I wouldn’t overthink anything as I had roughly 6 months to complete the record, mastering included. I was going with 6 tracks at frst, but kept going back on one in particular, which I didn’t include in the end as I thought didn’t have the luxury (or curse) to doubt. During these 6 months, I was blessed to work with Oliver Coates on cello parts ; as it is hard to write what I wanted precisely, I would try my best to explain an idea of movement, an image (like a swarm of birds, heavy cello rain at sea,…) and Oliver would get it almost instantly, and so quickly. He really brought life to the record. Other than that I would just have flms like The Piano or The Lovely Bones in mind while working, think of them like dreams and that my music would resonate in them (although Cocteau Twins’ Alice tends to resonate louder anyway).

– Usually what do you do?

Malibu – Watch youtube videos, read stuff, write things sometimes when I have something to say, look at the sky through my window….pretty uneventful things.

– What are your hopes and thoughts for the future?

Malibu – In the near future I hope to perform my music more than once with a strings ensemble. I also hope to visit Japan, Iceland and Wales (for music, or not !).
