Meuko!

Kelvin T – 今はHKDI(香港知專設計學院)で勉強してます。

– 『Unlock Voice』

<原文>

– How did you get into musicmaking?

Kelvin T – I got into GarageBand with my iPad mini around 2014. It’s so easy to make something in there. That’s where I made most of my self-released EPs. Then I moved to Ableton around 2015, because it allows me to do so much more than GarageBand. I still use both software now, and I use more software and hardware than before.

– What do you make music under the influence of?

Kelvin T – A lot of times when I’m making music, it’s like an experiment. Maybe I want to push the limits of a synth, or try odd time signatures, or change the BPM throughout the song, or synthesize some weird sounds, or trying to make a trap beat with my own sounds. The experimentation is what influenced my music.

– What are your views about Hong Kong and Shanghai electronic music scene?

Kelvin T – The Hong Kong scene is quite diverse. There’s all sorts of music with different crews representing different music styles. Even though we’re doing different things, we’re supportive of each other. However, there aren’t any legit club spaces like OIL or ALL in Hong Kong. There’s some DIY venues and livehouses, but not club spaces.I don’t think I can comment on the Shanghai electronic music scene, since I haven’t dig deep into the scene. I’ve been to Club ALL, but there are other places or events or festivals that I haven’t been to in Shanghai.

– What’s the difference between Hong Kong and Shanghai scene?

Kelvin T – I don’t know much about the Shanghai scene, so I can’t comment on that. Maybe if I lived in Shanghai for a long while, I’ll get to know the differences thoroughly.

Usually what do you do?

Kelvin T – I study in HKDI now. During my free time, I make music, watch YouTube, or sleep. I try out a lot of different music software and hardware. Lately I’ve been interested in Korg Electribe Wave and modular synths.

– What is Absurd TRAX & Genome 6.66 Mbp like to you?

Kelvin T – They are the labels where I can find my sense of belonging. I didn’t know there are people who have similar musical taste as me in Hong Kong or China before I met them. I feel like Absurd TRAX & Genome 6.66 Mbp are the ones who made me who I am now and helped me confirm what I want to do.

– Please tell me the process of production of “Unlock Voice”?

Kelvin T – For this album, I want the songs to sound like there’s a leading voice. Like in Escaped, I want the song’s feeling the synth line to be like a Linkin Park song, super emo but aggressive. And in Objects Talking, I want the synths to sound like a living being.

I used Ableton to make most of the songs, though I used the Korg Volca Kick in Dropbar, Exclaim, and Escaped. Sometimes I want to push the limits of a synth and imagine the synth as a rockstar, putting as much emotions into a song.

That’s the point of Unlock Voice; inside each synth, no matter hardware or software, has a soul in it. Depending on how you use synths, you can fill so much emotions in them, making them sound like crying an emo synth lead, an aggressive kick, or a possessed demon. It’s about unlocking the emotional soul inside each instrument.

You’ll notice that there’s no vocals in each songs. Originally I was going to find some rap features or include my own voice. But then I thought that the songs are good enough already. They don’t sound like instrumentals, but rather a finished song with synths singing. That’s also where the Voice in Unlock Voice came from; the voices came from my music.

– Do you have any future plans?

Kelvin T – Absurd TRAX will have a lot of events soon, and it’s all for Absurd – The End Of 2018 event series. I’m performing in OIL Club on 15th with Organ Tapes, Scattered Purgatory, Yayoyanoh, ASJ, Tzekin, and Warmchainss. Also I’m DJing in Chengdu soon. Can’t post any details now though.

– What would your ideal future be like?

Kelvin T – Make more music. Help other people make music. Never worry about money.
