インターネットが限界まで肥大化し、死と再生を繰り返す現代。現実と虚構の輪郭はゆっくりと溶け、私たちはその中で生きている。
Machine Girl の最新アルバム『PsychoWarrior: MG Ultra X』は、そんな時代における人間の意識の中枢を覗くデジタル・サイコスリラー・サウンドトラック。
彼らはこのアルバムを携え、12月にジャパンツアーを開催する（12月2日東京、12月3日大阪）。終わりなきワールドツアーの只中で、中心人物のMatt Stephensonに、Machine Girlとしてこの作品が生まれた背景、そして “サイコであること” の意味を聞いた。
──今回のアルバムの『PsychoWarrior: MG Ultra X』というタイトルには、どんな意味やイメージを込めていますか？
Machine Girl : 『PsychoWarrior: MG Ultra X』では、死んだインターネット時代のためのアーキタイプ（元型）を作りたくて。インターネットという無限の鏡張りの家のような場所で作り上げられ、そしてその邪悪なサイキックな力と戦う兵士、というイメージですね。
──（Machine Girlの中心人物の）Matt Stephensonは、集合的無意識やアーキタイプ、シャドウセルフの概念からインスピレーションを受けたと語っています。これを音楽として表現する際に意識したことは何ですか？
Machine Girl : 主に歌詞を通してですが、曲の土台そのものにもそういった要素が反映されていると思っていて、アルバムの中に多様なスタイルや態度の曲があるのは、それぞれが異なるアーキタイプ的視点を表しているからだと考えています。
──現代社会や文化の心理的な課題（SNSやテクノロジーによる影響など）を、アルバムでどのように反映させましたか？
Machine Girl : ネット文化や、私たちのスマホ／SNS中毒の頭の中と同じように、めちゃくちゃ散らかっていて、ADHDのような感じが全体にありますね。
──このアルバムはこれまでのMachine Girl作品と比べて、どのような「変化」があると感じていますか？
Machine Girl : 明らかなのは、Lucyがギターで参加していることや、音楽をプロデューサー作品として考えるのではなく、バンドのように作っている点です。
──ARG／拡張された物語性について。音楽以外のメディアを取り入れることで、アルバム体験はどのように変化すると考えていますか？
Machine Girl : ARGを追ってくれたファンの方には、この曲たちが頭の中でARGで展開されたストーリーのサウンドトラックのように感じてもらえたら嬉しいです。決して歌詞自体がARGについて書かれているわけではありません。実際、ARGの内容はPsychowarriorを完成させた後に作りました。それでも、このアルバムを「まだ存在しないARG映画のOST」として想像するのは楽しいと思います…（まだですが！）
──サウンド面では、これまで以上に多層的でダイナミックな印象があります。制作の出発点や意図したサウンドの方向性について教えてください。
Machine Girl : このアルバムは、数年前のデモを最後まで何度も調整・再構築した曲と、『We Don’t Give a Fuck』のようにほぼ一晩で作った新曲のミックスなんです。正直、古いデモを再構築するよりも、新しく一から作る方が好みでした。すぐにビジョンを固めて、最後まで迷わず作り切れるから。
──制作過程で印象的だったエピソードがあれば教えてください。
Machine Girl : 『We Don’t Give a Fuck』はすごく誇りに思っている曲です。一晩でゼロから作り上げたから。作る前から明確なビジョンがあって、その日に「この曲を今夜作る」と決めて、実際に作り切った。夜更けに1人で狂ったように作業している時間がすごく楽しかった。これからもまたこういう作り方をしていきたいですね。
──ライブ・ギタリストとしてサポートしていた Lucy Caputi が正式加入し、トリオになりました。どのような経緯だったのでしょう？
Machine Girl : Lucy とは何年も前から Machine Girl にギターで参加する話をしていましたが、2022年以降のツアーが本当に狂ったように多くて、実現まで思った以上に時間がかかってしまった。Lucyはつい最近までフロリダに住んでいたので、これからようやく一緒に多くの時間を過ごして音楽制作したり、バンドの結束を強めたりできるのが楽しみです。
──トリオになって、制作プロセスやクリエイティブ面での変化はありましたか？
Machine Girl : 『Psychowar』の中盤を書いているとき、Lucyとギターを交互に弾いて拡張されたクラウトロック的パートを一緒に作った経験はとても楽しかったです。誰かとアイデアを出し合えることは素晴らしい。Sean、Lucy、僕の3人なら、一から曲作りをするのがすごく楽しくなると思う。
──今後の展望や目標を教えてください。
Machine Girl : Machine Girl をさらに新しい領域へ押し進めたい。次のレコードは（現時点で何も計画はないけれど）時間をかけて作りたいと思ってて。その間もいろいろ制作して、小規模なプロジェクトはリリースしていく予定です。
──日本でのライブでは、『PsychoWarrior: MG Ultra X』の世界や楽曲をどのように表現する予定ですか？
Machine Girl : 俺たちは「サイコ」になる 🙂
──最後に、12月の日本公演を前に日本のリスナーへメッセージをお願いします。
Machine Girl : 私たちは皆、ティーンの頃からMelt-Bananaのファンで、ついに彼らと一緒に演奏できることに信じられないほど興奮しています！
──What meaning or imagery did you intend with the title PsychoWarrior?
Machine Girl : With Psychowarrior I wanted to create an archetype for the dead internet age. A soldier forged by and fighting against the evil psychic forces of the infinite house of mirrors that is the internet.
──Matt Stephenson has mentioned that he drew inspiration from concepts such as the collective unconscious, archetypes, and the shadow self. How did you approach expressing these ideas through the music?
Machine Girl : Mostly through lyrics but its also definitely influenced some of the foundations of some of the songs on the record. I think that in some ways the variety of styles and attitudes of the songs on the record represent different archetypal viewpoints.
──How does the album reflect the psychological challenges of contemporary society and culture, such as the effects of social media and technology?
Machine Girl : I think its all over the place and A.D.D. as hell just like internet culture is and like all of our phone / social media addicted minds are.
──Compared to previous Machine Girl releases, what kind of changes or new directions do you feel are present in this album?
Machine Girl : Obviously the inclusion of Lucy on guitar and treating more of the music like a band would as opposed to thinking of it as a producer.
──Regarding the ARG and expanded narrative elements: how do you think incorporating media beyond music changes the album experience?
Machine Girl : I hope for fans who followed the ARG, the songs can be a soundtrack in their minds to the story that unfolded in the ARG. Not that the lyrics are about the ARG at all. I wrote the entire ARG after Psychowarrior was finished. Still, I think it’s fun to picture the album like an OST to an ARG-movie that doesnt exist. (yet!)
──The album’s sound feels more layered and dynamic than ever. Can you tell us about the starting point for production and the intended direction for the sound?
Machine Girl : This album was a mix of some years-old demos being tweaked and reworked right up until the end and also some new songs (like ‘We Don’t Give a Fuck’) which were basically made in one night on my own. I think I preferred writing and producing the newer stuff from scratch as opposed to reworking the old demos though because it was much easier to immediately commit to a vision and execute it all the way to the end without overthinking it.
──Are there any memorable stories or episodes from the production process that you can share?
Machine Girl : ‘We Don’t Give a Fuck’ is a song I’m very proud of on the record because like I said in the earlier answer, I made it from scratch in one night. I had a vision of that track before I tried to make it and I felt really proud of deciding that day, “I will make this song tonight”. And that’s what I did. And working on it late into the night alone just kind of going crazy was really fun. I definitely want to make more songs in that way again in the future.
──Lucy Caputi, who previously supported the band as a live guitarist, officially joined, making the project a trio. Could you tell us how this came about?
Machine Girl : Lucy and I had talked about her contributing guitar for Machine Girl for many years and we’ve just had such a crazy touring schedule since 2022 that it took us longer than we would have liked to finally get together and make it happen. It’s still been quite a process because Lucy lived in Florida until about a month ago, so I look forward to finally getting to spend a lot of time together working on more music and getting the band even tighter.
──As a trio, were there any notable changes in your production process or creative approach?
Machine Girl : Another great experience working on the record was writing the middle section of Psychowar and Lucy and I passing the guitar back and forth to write the extended krautrocky part. Having another person there to bounce ideas off with is great. I think between myself Sean and Lucy it’ll be a lot of fun writing stuff from scratch together.
──Could you share any plans or aspirations you have for the future?
Machine Girl : To continue to push Machine Girl into new heights and territory. I think we want to take our time with the next record (which there is no plan for currently) whenever we get around to it, but in the meantime we will definitely be working on stuff and putting smaller projects out.
──For your upcoming shows in Japan, how do you plan to present the songs and world of PsychoWarrior live?
We plan on going psycho 🙂
──Finally, what message would you like to send to your Japanese listeners ahead of your December shows?
Machine Girl : We’ve all been Melt Banana fans since we were teenagers, and we’re unbelievably excited to finally play with them!
