東京・大阪を回るジャパンツアー開催

変化と神秘に満ちたエレクトロニック・ミュージック、ポケモンへの愛。11/9〜11/10に東京と大阪で初来日ツアーを行う、オーストラリア・セントラルコースト出身のプロデューサー/DJ/SSW、Ninajirachiへのメールインタビューが実現した。

アーティスト名をポケモンのキャラクター“ジラーチ”から引用したというNinajirachiは、2019年にデビューして以降、日本のゲームカルチャーへの憧憬と自然界からのインスピレーションを元に、EDMの解体やエレクトロニックミュージックの更新を進めてきた。とりわけ、自身としてもより一層その立ち位置に自覚的になった『girl EDM』シリーズでのガーリーなタッチは記憶に新しい。

Nina Las Vegasが立ち上げたレーベル〈NLV Records〉の中核的存在として、ますますオーストラリアと世界の架け橋になりつつあるNinajirachiの、煌めくテキストをチェック。

──NinajirachiのEDMは変化に富んでおり、多様性に満ちていて、あらゆる種類の興奮がコラージュされているように聴こえます。2000年代後半～2010年代前半のEDMと比べると「変化」や「流動性」といった点が “girl EDM” の美学だと思うのですが、その意見についてはどう思いますか？

Ninajirachi : ありがとうございます！本当に光栄です。そうですね、EDMには既存の意味と、実験するためのトロフィーがあるのが好きなんです。

──あなたの音楽は、ただ単に現実を忘れて踊るEDMというわけではなく、現世からの逃避や宇宙への浮遊といった、よりスピリチュアルな面を含んでいるように感じます。もしそうであるなら、そういった点はこれまでの人生のいつどういった場面で形成されたのでしょうか。

Ninajirachi : 私は昔からファンタジー小説の本やゲーム、映画に夢中でした。小さい頃は、Lady Gaga、Grimes、Empire of the Sun、Bladee、Porter Robinsonなど、音楽やビデオにファンタジーの要素を取り入れているエレクトロニック・ミュージックのアーティストが大好きでした。19歳の時に初めてサイケデリックを試したんだけど、その日以来、よりスピリチュアルな人間になりました。

──『Second Nature』をはじめ、多くの作品において自然界の神秘や混沌がテーマになっているように思います。あなたが過ごしたオーストラリアの大自然の景色は、それらに対してどの程度影響を与えていると思いますか？

Ninajirachi : 私はオーストラリアの小さな町の出身だから、自然に囲まれて育ちました。自然のサウンドは予測できないから好きだし、だからエレクトロニック・ミュージックも好きなんです。

──Ninajirachiの作品においては既存の音源や自然の音など多くのサンプリングが取り入れられていますが、これまでのサンプリングで最もユニークな例をひとつ明かすとすると？

Ninajirachi : 「Ninacamina」という曲の最初のバージョンは、私の曲『Tiankeng』をIzzy Caminaがリミックスしたもので、中国のTiankengについてのドキュメンタリーのサンプルが使われている。つまり、サンプルのサンプルのようなものなんです。『girl EDM.』で一番好きなサンプルの瞬間かもしれない。

──今年は、初期のあなたの活動に大きな影響を与えたであろう音楽家が続々と作品をリリースしています。Porter Robinson 『SMILE!:D』、Charli XCX『BRAT』、Mura Masa『Curve 1』、Jamie xx『In Waves』……そしてSOPHIE『SOPHIE』。それぞれ、どのような思いで聴きましたか？

Ninajirachi : みんな大好きです！今までで一番好きなアーティストばかりで、素晴らしい音楽の年だった <3

──Spotifyで公開しているプレイリスト＜girl EDM＞では、日本のグループ・Perfumeを挙げていました。日本のエレクトロニックミュージックに対してはどのような印象を持っていて、どういった点が好みですか？

Ninajirachi : Perfume大好きです。幼い頃、大好きだったテレビやゲームのほとんどが日本製だったので、いつの間にか日本の音楽を聴いていました。日本のエレクトロニック・ミュージックは、とても先進的で細部までこだわっているけれど、私にとってはとてもエモーショナルでもあります。

──「ポケモン不思議のダンジョン」のサントラに影響を受けたとのこと。そもそもアーティスト名をポケモンの「ジラーチ」から引用していますが、どのようなゲームをプレイしてきて、それが音楽にどういった影響を与えてきたか教えてください。

Ninajirachi : 『ポケモン不思議のダンジョン 時の探検隊』とポケモン第4世代/第5世代は、おそらくこれまでで最も好きなゲームです。人生で何千時間もプレイしてきたと思うし、サウンドトラックは本当に私に染み込んでいます。サウンドフォントやデジタルの音色は、私の音楽に最も影響を与えているものだろうけど、実際の音楽自体も私にとっては特別なものです。その中でも特に好きな曲は、ポケモンのCraggy Coastの音楽。幼い頃に初めて聴いたこの曲は忘れられない。エレクトロニックミュージックで珍しい拍子の変化を聴いたのは、この曲が初めてだったから。終始、5/4拍子と3/4拍子が切り替わって、たぶん7歳くらいだったと思うけど、そういうのを聴いたのは初めてでした。すぐには理解できなかったけど、だからこそすごく興奮しました。

──アートワークを描いている情緒（Jyoucyo）とはどういった形で出会ったのでしょうか。情緒のアートワークのどのような点が自身の音楽と共鳴していると思いますか？

Ninajirachi : 初めて情緒のアカウントをTwitterで見たのは2022年頃でした。2023年の初めに、Ravennaとの「1×1」という曲のアートワークを探していて、情緒にDMを送りました。情緒がアートワークを作りたいと言ってくれた時はとても嬉しかったです。情緒のスタイルが好きなのは、私が音楽で見るのが好きな要素が組み合わさっているからで、もしかしたら私の音楽の作り方と哲学的に似ているかもしれない。デジタルであると同時に自然であり、自然のイメージを革新的な方法でテクノロジーで操作し、文字通り自然のイメージを新しいものに引き伸ばしている。アニメの女の子たちはかわいいけれど、幽霊のようでもあり、超自然的でもあります。私が『girl EDM』について話したことと似ているかもしれない。普通なら違う形で表現されるものを、独自の解釈で表現しているから面白い。あまり感傷的になるつもりはなかったんだけど、私はこのスタイルが本当に大好きだし、私の音楽にぴったりだと感じています。長い間、アートワークに自分の顔を載せることにも抵抗があったので、解釈的な肖像画を描いてくれるアーティストと仕事をしたことは、ジャケットに自分の顔を載せることに抵抗がなくなるいいステップになりました。また、青は私の好きな色で、私のカバーアートはほとんど青だし、情緒も青を多用しています。『1×1』のアートは2年近く前のもので、それ以来アートワークのほとんどを情緒が作ってくれています。最初にDMを送ったときは、そんな風になるとは思っていなかった。情緒に新しいアイデアやアートワークが必要な曲を送るたびに、情緒が描いてくれたものを即座に気に入っていました。こうして一緒に仕事ができて本当に良かった！

──あなたのスタイリングはNinajirachiの音楽をそのまま表現しているように見えていつも素敵なのですが、ファッションにおいてこれまで影響を受けたもの・人があれば教えてください。

Ninajirachi : ありがとう！何度も繰り返すようだけど、私は本当に自分が育ったメディアの影響を受けています。いつもアニメのキャラクターやポケモントレーナー、メカや神話的なもの、毛皮のようなものになりたいと思っていました。大きなプロポーションや、SFや魔法を感じさせるアクセサリーが大好き。

──NLV Recordsに所属しているミュージシャンは非常にユニークで、オリジナリティを感じる作品が多い印象です。Kota Banks以外で、今あなたが特に魅力を感じている人を教えてください。

Ninajirachi : そう、私はNLVが本当に大好き。彼女と出会う何年も前からNina Las Vegasの大ファンでした。Kota BanksとLacesとは本当に長い間一緒に仕事をしていて、彼らは私が10代の頃からの友人だということはほとんどの人が知っています。私とSwickは2021年に一緒にEPを作ったんだけど、今でもそのサウンドはすごくいい。本当に気に入っていて、完成させてリリースしたいと思っているんだけど、同じ街にはいないんです！いつかね。

今回のジャパンツアーを記念したTシャツが会場限定で発売決定。詳細は会場にて確認してください。フロントは『girl EDM』のアートワークをベースにし、バックはNinajirachi自身がデザインを手がけた。今回のTシャツはNinajirachiが企画し、AVYSSが制作をサポートした。

──Ninajirachi’s EDM is varied, diverse and sounds like a collage of all kinds of excitement. compared to edm from the late 2000s – early 2010s, ‘change’ and ‘fluidity’ are the ‘girl EDM ‘ aesthetic, what do you think about that opinion?

Ninajirachi : Thank you! I’m really flattered. I agree. I like that EDM has existing meaning and tropes to experiment with.

──Your music seems to contain a more spiritual aspect, such as escaping this life and floating off into space, rather than just being EDM to dance and forget reality. If so, when and how were these aspects formed in your life so far?

Ninajirachi : I’ve been into fantasy fiction books, games and movies since forever. When I was little I always loved electronic music artists that used fantasy elements in their music and videos, like Lady Gaga, Grimes, Empire of the Sun, Bladee, Porter Robinson, etc. I also tried psychedelics for the first time when I was 19 and I’ve become a much more spiritual person since that day, it really changed my life for the best.

──The mystery and chaos of the natural world seems to be a theme in your other works, such as “Second Nature”. To what extent do you think the Australian wilderness landscape you have spent time in has influenced these works?

Ninajirachi : It has probably influenced me a lot, I’m from a small town in Australia, so I grew up surrounded by it. I like nature sounds because they’re so unpredictable, which is also why I like electronic music. Sometimes they are the same to me.

──Ninajirachi’s work incorporates a lot of sampling, both from existing sources and from nature, but if you had to reveal one of the most unique examples of sampling so far, what would it be? 

Ninajirachi : The first version of the song Ninacamina was Izzy Camina’s remix of my song Tiankeng, which has a sample from a documentary about Tiankeng in China. So it’s like a sample of a sample of a sample. It’s probably my favourite sample moment on girl EDM.

──This year has seen the release of a number of musicians who would have had a major influence on your early work, including Porter Robinson ‘SMILE!:D’, Charli XCX ‘BRAT’, Mura Masa ‘Curve 1’, Jamie xx ‘In Waves’ …… and SOPHIE ‘SOPHIE’. What did you think of each of these?

Ninajirachi : I love them all!! Those are all some of my favourite artists ever, it’s been a wonderful music year <3

──In your playlist <girl EDM> on Spotify, you mentioned the Japanese group Perfume. What is your impression of Japanese electronic music and what do you like about it?

Ninajirachi : I love Perfume!! When I was very young, most of the television and video games I loved were made in Japan, so I was listening to Japanese music before I even knew it. Japanese electronic music is very forward thinking and detailed but also extremely emotive to me.

──You are influenced by the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon soundtrack. You quote your artist name from Pokémon’s ‘Jirachi’ – can you tell us what games you’ve played and how this has influenced your music?

Ninajirachi : Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers and Pokemon gen 4/5 in general are probably my favourite games ever. I’ve probably played thousands of hours playing them over my life and the soundtracks have really sunk in. The sound fonts and digital timbres are probably the thing you can most obviously hear influencing my music, but the actual music itself is extremely special to me too. One of my favourite songs from any of those games is the music from Craggy Coast in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers. I will never forget hearing it for the first time as a little girl because it was probably the first time I ever heard an unusual time signature or a time signature change in electronic music. It switches between 5/4 and 3/4 throughout. I was probably around 7 years old and it was the first time I had heard anything like that. I didn’t understand it right away but that’s why it was so exciting to me.

──How did you meet Jyoucyo, who paints your artwork? What aspects of Jyoucho’s artwork do you think resonate with your own music?

Ninajirachi : I first saw Jyoucyo’s account on Twitter around 2022. In early 2023 I was looking for artwork for the song 1×1 with Ravenna and I sent Jyoucyo a dm. I was so happy when they wanted to make the artwork. I like Jyoucyo’s style because it combines the elements that I also like to see combined in music, maybe even philosophically similar to the way I make music. It’s digital and natural at the same time, taking images of nature and manipulating them with technology in an innovative way, literally stretching the nature images into something new. The anime girls are cute but also ghostly and supernatural in a way that’s beautiful but uncanny and makes you look twice. Maybe it’s similar to how I talked about girl EDM, where it’s interesting to me because it’s a unique interpretation of something that is usually presented differently. I didn’t mean to be too sentimental with all of this but I truly love the style so much and it feels perfect for my music. For a long time I was also against having my face on my artwork, so working with an artist that could paint interpretive portraits of me was a nice step towards being comfortable with having my face on the cover. Also, blue is my favourite colour, almost all of my cover arts are blue, and Jyoucyo also uses lots of blue. That 1×1 art was almost two years ago and Jyoucyo has made almost all of my music artworks since. I didn’t plan for it to be that way when I sent the first dm, it just kept going naturally because I found it so easy to work together. Every time I would send Jyoucyo a new idea or song that needed an artwork, I would instantly love what they painted. I’m really happy it worked out this way, I’m really grateful to work together!

──Your styling always looks great, as it seems to be a direct representation of Ninajirachi’s music. What or who have been your influences in fashion?

Ninajirachi : Thank you! I know I’m repeating myself a lot but I really am so influenced by the media I grew up with. I always wanted to look like a cartoon character, Pokemon trainer, something mech or mythical or furry. I love big proportions and accessories that feel sci-fi or magical.

──I have the impression that the musicians on NLV Records are very unique and their work is very original. Apart from Kota Banks, who else are you particularly attracted to at the moment? 

Ninajirachi : Yes, I really love NLV Records, I’m so lucky to be part of the group. I was a big fan of Nina Las Vegas for years before I met her. Most people know that I’ve worked with Kota Banks and Laces for a really long time and they have been my friends since I was a teenager. Me and Swick also made a whole EP together in 2021 that still sounds really good to this day. We really like it, we want to finish and release it so badly but we are never in the same city!! One day haha.
