東京の街と光とDorian Electra

 

 

Dorian Electraが東京に初降臨。

 

自らの感性をビジュアルへと還元させてきたDorian Electraは、学校の課題をミュージック・ビデオ形式で提出するというユニークな高校時代を過ごし、中でも哲学者への愛を語ったビデオ「I’m in Love with Friedrich Hayek / フリードリヒ・ハイエクに恋してる」がヴァイラルを起こす。その後本格的に音楽を作りはじめ、気づけば変幻自在のポップ・フューチャリスト / ヴィジュアル・アーティスト / ファッショニスタ / ジョーカー / インターネット哲学者へと変容。

 

そして2023年の末、突如として極東の地に降り立ったDorianとAVYSSのコラボレーションが実現。発光しながら東京の街を彷徨うDorianに宿るピュアネスに涙。輝かしいシューティングとインタビューを通して、流動し続けるクィア・エスセティックをぜひ感じて――

──東京へようこそ。未知の言語の騒音の広がりと、猥雑な街並みの窮屈さは、アーティストとしてのあなたにどのようなインスピレーションを与えていますか？

 

Dorian Electra : 自分の出身地とは多くの点で異なる新しい場所に行くのは素晴らしいことです。旅行するときはいつも、その土地の歴史や文化について学んだり、ビデオを見たり、本を読んだりして、出来る限り（その土地に）没頭するのが好きです。

 

──Welcome to Tokyo. How does the expanse of noise of an unknown language and the crampedness of an obscene cityscape inspire you as an artist?

 

Dorian Electra : It’s amazing to be somewhere new that’s so different in so many ways from where I’m from. Whenever I travel, I love learning about the history of the place and the culture, watching videos or reading books and immersing myself as much as possible. 

 

 

 

 

──東京という異空間で、chloma やLarvae yeT を装うことによって体感した心地よさと心地悪さをそれぞれ教えてください。

 

Dorian Electra : 撮影は、旅行初日に東京の様々な場所を見ることができた素晴らしい機会でした。でも、かなり寒かったので、ちょっと大変でした(笑)。

 

──Please tell us about the comfort and discomfort you experienced by wearing chloma and Larvae yeT in the different space of Tokyo.

 

Dorian Electra : Doing the photoshoot was an amazing opportunity to see so many different parts of Tokyo on the first day of my trip, my first ever time in the city. It was also pretty cold though hahaha so that was a bit challenging at times lol. 

 

 

 

 

──作品を追うごとに、音楽性はもちろん、あなたにとっての「セクシーであること」の定義も変化してきているように感じます。現在のあなたは、どのようなものをセクシーだと定義づけますか？

 

Dorian Electra : セクシーとは、自分に自信を持たせてくれるものであり、最強の自分を感じさせてくれるものだと思います。私にとって、それは間違いなく常に変化しています。

 

──It seems to me that your definition of what is “sexy” has changed with each work, not only in terms of musicality, but also in terms of your definition of what is sexy. What would you define as sexy today?

 

Dorian Electra : I think sexy is whatever makes you feel confident and makes you feel like your strongest self. And for me, that is definitely always changing. 

 

 

 

 

──あなたが自身のジェンダーを意識しはじめる以前に、好んでいた音楽やアートがありましたら教えてください。

 

Dorian Electra : 私はクラシックロックを聴いて育ち、子供の頃はいつも華やかでアンドロジナスな男性ロックスターを尊敬していました。

 

──What music or art did you like before you became aware of your gender?

 

Dorian Electra : I grew up listening to classic rock music and always looked up to flamboyant/androgynous male rockstars as a kid so I think that definitely influenced me a lot.

 

 

 

 

──あなたの作品にはあまりに多様な音楽性が混在しています。破壊的でありたい時、快楽的でありたい時、不安を吐露したい時……など、その時々の感情と特定の音楽性が結びついてはいますか？

 

Dorian Electra : 私は確かにハードでダークな音楽が好きだし、その方が明らかに “アップビート “や “ハッピー “なサウンドの音楽よりも、ポジティブな感情を祝福してくれるような気がする。だから、間違いなくそっちに惹かれるんです。

 

──There is such a diverse mix of musicality in your work. Is there a particular musicality that ties in with your emotions at the time, such as when you want to be subversive, hedonistic, or when you want to vent your insecurities ……?

 

Dorian Electra : I definitely like really hard and dark music and I feel like even that helps me celebrate positive emotions sometimes more than super obviously “upbeat” or “happy” sounding music. So I definitely gravitate more towards that. 

 

 

 

 

──あなたの表現は、ジェンダーにとどまらず、世の中に存在するあらゆる二元論を攪乱しているように見えます。とは言え、生きることは選択と決断の連続です。時に選択と決断を迫られる局面もあるかと思いますが（支持政党、主義主張…etc.）、その度にどのような判断を心がけていますか？

 

Dorian Electra : 私は相反するものや、通常は一緒にならないようなもの（美的、概念的、または音楽的な両極端なものの組み合わせ）（男性的なものと女性的なもの、硬質なものと軟質なもの、歴史的なものと未来的なものなど）を組み合わせるのが好きで、物事を面白おかしく、あるいは予想外の方法で融合させようとすることは、間違いなく私が最も興奮することの一つです。

 

──Your expression seems to disturb every dualism that exists in the world, not only gender. Nevertheless, life is a series of choices and decisions. What kind of decisions do you try to make each time you are faced with a choice and a decision (party support, principles…etc.)?

 

Dorian Electra : I like to try to combine opposites or things that typically wouldn’t go together (combining aesthetic, conceptual, or musical extremes) (such as masculine and feminine, hard and soft, historical and futuristic) and trying to fuse things together in a funny or unexpected way is definitely one of the things that gets me most excited.
