Swan Meat

– EP「BLOOD SUPERNOVA」

〈Swan Meat

First, introduce yourself for AVYSS.

Swan MeatMy name is Reba, I’m a music producer and my producer name is ‘Swan Meat.’ I just released an EP called Blood Supernova on my made-up label imprint “swanni records.”

Can you tell us about yourself as an artist background, origin of a name, styles and inspirations.

Swan MeatI’m blessed, because I had an incredibly diverse musical upbringing. My mom was really into Broadway musicals, which is probably the reason I am into bombastic, big soundscapes today. Through doing local theater with my mom, I was introduced to the concept of the orchestra, which led to me playing violin from a really young age. I played in orchestras throughout my entire childhood and studied the Suzuki method. When I was a teenager I was introduced to the local hardcore/DIY punk scene in and around Washington D.C., where I’m from, and that exposed me to a whole new world of sound. I was super into “real screamo” stuff like Circle Takes the Square, Kodan Armada, pageninetynine, and hardcore punk/grindcore like Coke Bust, Magrudergrind, Weekend Nachos, the list goes on. I also played the guitar and got really into progressive rock and math rock, my favorite bands are probably Dance Gavin Dance, Fall of Troy, stuff like that.  I make electronic music, but my biggest influences always came from the analog world.  My name comes from a poem by the writer Natalie Eilbert, but now I tell people it comes from my favorite red carpet looks, Björk’s swan dress and Lady Gaga’s meat dress. LOL.

We were very fascinated by this EP. Could you tell us the concept of your EP ? (Also explain a sludge goa and a neo-crunkcore in your word.)

Swan MeatSo my last EP was called FLESHWORLD, and I saw the name of the EP as a metaphor for the music within: tons of weird, teeming sonic junk housed within this coherent “body” that was the record. The body in the record is a planet called Fleshworld. A supernova is a massive, luminous stellar explosion– and that’s what this new EP, BLOOD SUPERNOVA, is for me. I wanted to explode the “body-planet” I built on FLESHWORLD and push all the production techniques & melody writing I was doing before to their absolute limit. Sludge goa is the sort of joke genre term I coined after watching a bunch of psytrance production tutorials and not relating to any of it. I absolutely love psy, and since 2021 I’ve been using a lot of triplet patterns and tropes of the genre in my music. But the guys in the community were seemingly so obsessed with “clean” production, always talking about kick-bass alignment and tuning your kick and at a certain point, when you focus too much on the technical stuff, the music loses its essential power.  For me, sludge goa means taking the conventions of this usually very minimal genre and breaking them.  Neo crunk is what I’m working on for my next release. B)

What was it like when you were working on the EP? (About your lifestyle, production environment and music scene in Cologne after Covid-19).

Swan MeatI produced tons of tracks during lockdown, which was rather strict in Germany, but many of those songs didn’t truly feel like me. I don’t think I’ll ever release most of this lockdown music that I made because somehow it’s obvious when you listen to the songs that I wasn’t feeling my best. However, the BLOOD SUPERNOVA tracks were the ones I kept coming back to, the jewels in a stash of fool’s gold, and I became obsessed with making them absolutely perfect. My production environment consists of lots of cans of monster energy, fairly cheap “gamer” speakers, a big MIDI keyboard, and my laptop; that’s pretty much it, and these articles became my best companions in 2020, 2021, and 2022 (especially now, ‘cos I’m writing more music than ever before).

In terms of the music scene here in Cologne after Covid-19, I think it has some work to do. The scene is still dominated by the same older crowd that dominated before the pandemic, which is shocking because so much new and innovative music was being made by young people during lockdown. “Schranz” techno has also become really dominant, this 140-160BPM hard techno stuff that is definitely fun in the club but also gets exhausting and isn’t very challenging to produce or listen to. I mean, I love that style of music and include it in my DJ sets, but Germany definitely needs to invite more diversity into the scene right now.

Hardcore, rave, trance, and the most distinctive feature of your sound, the waltz melody. What aspects of these appeal to you?

Swan MeatI like anything that is big, melodic, and euphoric, so of course I’m drawn to melodic hardcore and trance and big room stuff. My favorite artist in this umbrella of genres is probably onoken, who manages to write complex, clearly classically-inspired melodies with crazy percussion and breaks. There’s just something so pure and true about a massive supersaw lead banging out a rapturous melody in E minor.  When it comes to the waltz timing, I always like to insert an element of “surprise” into my music, it makes it more fun for me to produce, because I get bored really easily. I think switching up the time signature or key of a song is a simple enough yet dynamic way to write variations on a theme, or expand upon the melodic “concept” of a track.

Can you tell us about your encounters with Deli girls and shitney queers with whom you collaborated this time, and about the production process?

Swan MeatYes, that’s my friend Dan. We played together a couple times, notably for the epic Melting Point parties in New York City, and I was super blown away and a huge fangirl, but because I live in Germany we mostly got to know each other online. Basically we’d been talking about collaborating in person for a while and I sent them the skeleton of the track that became KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID and they threw down these incredible vocals and the rest is history. I think the track we made together might be my favorite.

After COVID-19, you have continued to produce a great deal of work. In 2020, you were also a virtual live performer on the Hurt-Free Network. Since COVID-19, have there been any changes in the way you express yourself or the direction of your music?

Swan MeatAbsolutely. Before covid I got a bit lost in the sauce, and was struggling to find my voice as a producer as well as in the wider electronic music landscape. During covid I hunkered down, practiced a lot, and started producing music “just for myself” again, because the prospect of clubs re-opening or getting booked seemed so far off. Now that things have opened up again, I find myself appreciating everything so much more–food,

exercise, nights with my friends, performing, and especially making music. This might be a bit cringe, but I find myself wanting to push myself more than ever to be the best producer I can possibly be. I want to write the weirdest melodies, silliest breaks, the squelchiest basses I possibly can.

Being on my own for so long, I also discovered so much music I’d never explored before and am opening myself up to new genres. I’ve been listening to country music, Sturgill Simpson is my favorite, I’ve been listening to bluegrass and trying to write banjo-esque melodies for DAW, getting into Steve Vai and virtuosic metal and deathcore stuff like Vulvodynia. I want to bring all of this into my music somehow, and I finally feel like I’m at a point where I could do so without failing completely!

Your tracks have sampled Ghost in the Shell and Touhou bullet hell game, and you play on Rinse Fm with Takaryu, which shows your affinity for Japanese culture as well as Berlin and the US. How do you usually find interesting content and culture, regardless of country?

Swan MeatIn the long run, the internet has probably been awful for society. The internet is probably a demon we unleashed upon the world. However, not all demons are 100% bad. In fact in the broader mythos they’re a neutral good, maybe a lawful evil. In the grimoire, for example, the demon spirit Barbatos reveals hidden treasures once concealed by magic; Haagenti with its gigantic griffin wings grants wisdom. So maybe the internet is this kind of demon, or a demon with an anima/animus, one good, one bad. In any case, the internet has done this for me– granted knowledge, revealed magic. I’m able to seek out music from all over the world and make friends everywhere. So when I found, for example, Takaryu’s music on soundcloud, I thought it was so well-produced and ebullient I had to have him on my show! Luckily, we became friends. I love so much stuff coming from Japan right now, and I think producers over there are really doing what I hope to achieve, this amalgam of math rock melodies and hard club stuff, like the stuff being released on HiTNEK TRACX or Login Records. One of my favorite producers right now is Supire, also from Japan, whose use of sampling and sound design is just magnificent. He chops breaks in such an innovative way that reminds me of Venetian Snares or Ruby My Dear.  But to answer your question more directly, I spend hours just browsing bandcamp, mostly, for cool weird epic music. I’m really shy in person, but on the internet I’m a social butterfly, so if I like something someone’s doing I’ll usually reach out to them and try to be their friend because I always want to learn new things. As such, I can truly say I have friends all over the world.

Can you tell us about your remix EP coming out in the summer.

Swan MeatI’ve got some friends working on remixes from my last EP as well as BLOOD SUPERNOVA, and I’m so excited about that. I’ll also be releasing more new solo music throughout the summer.

What kind of work or performance would you like to do in the future?

Swan MeatI really want to get an A/V live set together. I’ve been working with a lot of really talented visual artists lately and I think something really special might be coming together. In May and June I played a handful of dates opening up for Machine Girl, which gave me the opportunity to perform live for the first time since the pandemic. I’d been DJing a lot, but after playing live I found that’s where my heart is, so I’m trying to expand upon my current live set, turn it into more of a spectacle. I’m writing dance choreography for the BLOOD SUPERNOVA songs and little spoken word sketches to perform in between live renditions of my tracks. So, there’s a lot to set into motion!
